Optical sensors are most common type of fingerprint sensors. These type of sensors capture light and then turn the light into electrical signal which are used to create the fingerprint image. Optical sensors use array of photo transistor detectors to convert the light into electrical charge. The sensors use LED to illuminate the fingertip. When the fingertip is placed on the plate, the light emitted by the LED is reflected back from the fingertip. This reflected light is then projected towards the detector using a prism and a system of lenses. The detectors used in optical sensors are either charge coupled devices (CCD) or complementary metal-oxide semiconductors (CMOS) optical imagers. CCD detectors are sensitive to low levels of light but are expensive as compared to CMOS detectors. Most optical sensors used for consumer electronics thus use CMOS detectors due to its low cost and low power consumption. However, optical sensors are affected by a number of factors such as stray light and surface contamination. Since optical sensors are easy to spoof, some sensor developers have started using electro-optical imaging to detect spoof.
