Fingerprint Sensors Market Report, Industry Analysis, 2017–2023

Fingerprint sensors have grown significantly over the years due to an impending requirement of this technology in different industries. The fingerprint sensor is a part of a device known as fingerprint scanner. The image captured by the device is used for identification purposes. There are different technologies which are adopted in fingerprint sensors. Optical fingerprint sensors and capacitive fingerprint sensors are most commonly used fingerprint sensors.

The global fingerprint sensors market was estimated to be around $XX billion in 2016 and it is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of XX% throughout the forecast period to reach a value of $XX billion by 2023.Capacitive sensors had the largest share of $XX billion in 2016. However, optical sensors are expected to witness the fastest growth, growing at a CAGR of XX% in the forecast period. Significant developments and innovations are taking place in optical sensors. A major factor that drives the growth of optical sensors is significant increase in demand of optical sensors across wide range of applications.

Optical sensors are most common type of fingerprint sensors. These type of sensors capture light and then turn the light into electrical signal which are used to create the fingerprint image. Optical sensors use array of photo transistor detectors to convert the light into electrical charge. The sensors use LED to illuminate the fingertip. When the fingertip is placed on the plate, the light emitted by the LED is reflected back from the fingertip. This reflected light is then projected towards the detector using a prism and a system of lenses. The detectors used in optical sensors are either charge coupled devices (CCD) or complementary metal-oxide semiconductors (CMOS) optical imagers. CCD detectors are sensitive to low levels of light but are expensive as compared to CMOS detectors. Most optical sensors used for consumer electronics thus use CMOS detectors due to its low cost and low power consumption. However, optical sensors are affected by a number of factors such as stray light and surface contamination. Since optical sensors are easy to spoof, some sensor developers have started using electro-optical imaging to detect spoof.
